I'm going to update the Formula MiniSumo Wiki page with a specification based upon the discussion here and in the drive discussion.

This is the intended text:
All UK MiniSumo TournamentRules are applicable, this specification provides a number of additional constraints to provide a low-cost frame work for schools and budget builders. While the Formula attempts to be competitive, it limits some of the components used to build the minisumo. We would like to keep this specification stable but discussing is encouraged, with the MiniSumo Forum offering a suitable location.

Inspiration and novel thinking is encouraged, there are no limiting specifications given to chassis, wheel or sensor configuration. Competative robot should be possible on a £25, or $50, as presented in the forumula concept minisumo robots.

*Formula Limitations*

. Maximum Nominal Battery Voltage - 9V
. Motor Gearbox - Vigor BO Range
. Motor Driver - SN754410, L293, L293D or L298

These limitations have the intended representation of low cost components and a ballanced speed torque match between competitions. These items are in common used it Educational and Hobbyist Markets.

I have planned a few notes with regard to the limitations.

Battery: There is no restriction on battery technology so that either alkaline or rechargeable can be utilised. The nominal rated value of the package is accepted, eg 9V for PP3, 9V for 6 x AA or 7.4V for a 2 cell li-poly pack.

Gearbox: All standard gear ratios, un-modified standard motors (Vigor confirmed FA130 utilised) - after market torque or speed tuned motors will be precluded.

Driver IC: These have consistent voltage drop over the outputs but differing diode snubbing and power ratings.

The chassis, sensor and controller items are open to user specification.

I hope this make sense and reasonably gets to the point of the Formula.

regards,
Colin

Checking detailed designations on these motors, there's more than initially meets the eye...

Vigor use FA-130RD-12240 where as the common replacement is FA-130RA-18100

F gives us the shape - Flat
A gives us the brushes - Metal
1 is an armature size
3 is based upon magnet or housing size
0 is a three pole motor
R is the magnet type
A or D is a designation I've not yet discovered

The 12 or 18 is a wire size - 0.12 or 0.18mm diameter, where as the 240 and 100 relate to the wire turns on the armature.

We're going to see a difference in performance between these two. The Vigor item is rated for 6V where as the replacement quoted is just 3V. I guess the good new is that Solarbotics sell the right replacement (inc. pinion gear) as the RM3 (also resold by Pololu), I'm still looking for a UK source.... but at least they are available.

regards,
Colin
