vacuum clarification

Postby slurp on Sun Apr 09, 2006 10:05 pm

Article 6 of the rules, restrictions on robot design, has been updated to clarify exclusions:-

The robot will not include any device that increases the apparent weight
of the robot (such as vacuums, fans, or magnetic systems to push or pull
the robot down onto the dohyo surface).

This clarification is meant for general competitions and is not mean to preclude advanced events where such devices may be permitted.

That rules out the suction system but I still think the sticky rubber is within the rules. It doesn't stop the robot from moving and it certainly doesn't damage the surface or leave any deposits in fact it tends to pick up any debris. I think I had better have two sets of tracks one with and one without and see which ones are allowed on the day.

The worst case is the paper test - is the rubber sticky enough to pick up a sheet of paper?

Yes - considered to be sticking you to the dohyo
No - considered acceptable

This really comes down to the organiser, if there's no deposits or marking I'm presuming that your rubber is going to fall on the safer side of that, but two sets of tracks is a good option. As is adjustable ballast for the weight check... a couple of grams might be the difference between your scales and those at the competition weigh in.
